Alpine Tunnel Habs, Pitkin, CO

Co-captain of team recording existing conditions of the town of Alpine, Colorado. The mortarless stone engine house and cold storage structures were designed and constructed by Italian stonemasons. Snow and erosion undermined the abandoned structures. My task was to reconstruct the stone structures and complete hand drawings for the survey. After on-site work was completed, I returned to Texas A&M for 5 months of hand-drawing the resulting notes with ink on Mylar. This project was nominated for the Peterson prize.

It has been pointed out that there is an error on the right drawing. The original drawings of the enginehouse which were used as a basis for this drawing were drawn by Joe Crae of Colorado in 1973, and the journal published in 1974.

Some sketches from my in-the-field journal for the HABS documentation of the Alpine Tunnel Historic Site.

Testimonials

"I was at the Archaeological Society meeting this weekend. You should know that a number of the archaeologists present were very impressed with your presentation, as was I."
Wolky Toll, DCA, State of New Mexico Archaeology

Quote of the Day

"He was a person who, if he did not exactly love change, had learned to welcome it, to stand in the shifting winds with a continuous alert curiosity about whatever might come next. I think this is the secret...of a different sort of youthfulness..."
