Founder Rachel Prinz is prepping for a lecture next week... on why we shouldn't be legislating the creation of ersatz architectural history (through zoning requirements that demand a certain "style" of building)... because it obscures whats actually great about design and architecture of the past... and puts us in a present without context. What are your thoughts?

Rachel took some of the ideas she has been taking in from the many books she is reading lately - from what she thought were disparate fields - and made a video for our readers about some cool ways we can try to elevate the practice of design. How else can we grow these conversations?

Archinia founder Rachel Prinz feels blessed to have helped the State Department welcome preservation professionals from around the world to America so we can share ideas. One of them, Issam Hajjar, from Syria... does for Syria a grander version of what Rachel does for New Mexico. Here's a link to his work!!! We hope you will enjoy these connections as much as we do!!! https://www.facebook.com/pages/SYRIA-graphy/177185982421154

Thanks to her work on 19 acequias in northern New Mexico, Archinia Founder Rachel Prinz was asked to present at TEDxAcequiaMadre 2012 at the Santa Fe College of Art and Design on 11/3/12. As part of a team that documented existing conditions and designed new criteria to protect acequias in Taos, Rachel developed a passion for protecting these valuable cultural and sustainability resources. Rachel can't wait to share her message that:
Water is the source of life, of sustenance, and of community... The acequias in New Mexico, and their thousands of cousins around the world, were sustainablity before it was cool - they worked for over 7,000 years - to:
- support local agriculture
- support water systems and cycles
- promote flood control
- allow adaptation to climatic variations
- and, promote healthy ecosystems.

Archinia founder Rachel here. I am extremely honored to have been the opening speaker for the SMU-in-Taos/UNM Fall lecture series on Sustainable Shelter Design last night. My partner in the effort was Illac Diaz, founder of Liters of Light.I hope you will all go out and check out the INCREDIBLE work his NGO is doing in developing nations around the world. I had no idea the power of light before meeting this very kind, cool, and passionate man. We'd like to wish them well in their work. If you have a few dollars to spare, you could make a difference for their mission. Check out the video on their front page - and you'll see what I mean. Here's their facebook fan page.

Another sweet note from a student in the UNM graduate program after my presentation there:
"Dear Rachel: I want to reiterate how much I appreciated your presentation, philosophies and your work. I have an Americorps Internship until summer of next year, and I have begun looking for work opportunities thereafter. I would absolutely love to assist you on any ongoing or new projects you may have. The interdisciplinary nature of your work, and the way you integrate history and spirituality into the sense of place inspires me and reaffirms my belief that design can connect multiple dimensions to create a powerful and healing moment in time." - Erin
