Greening the design of a new home:

Archinia's Vernacular Design Book

Teaches you how the people who came before, in the place you live, read their environment and built their homes to respond to it, without the need for mechanical systems. Follow the link to find your zone and ways of working with nature in design.

Archinia's Kins Domains Design Book

A Kins Domain is a self-supporting, self-sustaining microfarm, situated on 2.5 acres, or 1 hectare, of land. That's all it takes to design and build a space built for you, by you... that you can live, work, and create within. It has a living fence of berry bushes which serves as sustenance, dissuasion from crossing, provides habitat for birds, AND provides a means of supporting yourself. It has orchards, and gardens, and a pond. It has space for wildlife to come in an interact with you and your family. It feels like home, and is a perfect place to educate your kids, and interact with your community. And its about you. Finding the space within you to be the person you really want to be, and manifesting a physical space without you to allow that to unfold naturally. Kins Domains are different in every location, as they respond to their environment and the way that the sun and wind and rain and earth interact. Available for FREE here by chapter!

learning from the past:

Learning from the Past Series: The Four Books of Architecture by Palladio

The architect Palladio lived during the 16th century and was very active designing and building villas in the Veneto region of Italy, which includes the beautiful Italian towns of Venice and Vicenza. He used Vitruvius as a model, among others, and went on to write his own treatise on architecture, and his Four Books of Architecture today is considered a Bible of sorts for historic architects. He offers great guidance for building a home. Follow the link above to see what he had to say.

Learning from the Past Series #2: The Ten Books of Architecture by Vitruvius

The concept of a self-supporting farm is not a new idea at all. The concept of a agricultural Villa has been around for thousands of years, though once it was reserved for only the richest families. The Ten Books of Architecture was written in the first century BC by the Roman writer known as Vitruvius, whose real name was Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. Follow the link above to see what he had to say.

Testimonials

"Rachel has discovered within herself a strong motivation for scholarship and research. (She) has, by all standards, a thorough architectural education, a two semester study in Italy and a summer working as a preservation–design assistant in France with one of the leading Medievalists in the profession. Her personality reflects... intellectual growth and a synthesis of ideas. She also has an innate ability to understand architecture as design and as theory. I feel strongly about (her) potential as a scholar, a designer and as a future university instructor."
Joseph M. Hutchinson, Professor of Architectual History, Texas A&M

Quote of the Day

"The self is made, not given. It is a creative and active process of attending a life that must be heard, shaped, seen, said aloud into the world, finally enacted and woven into the lives of others."
Barbara Myerhoff
